A reflection on the difference between pearl shape and pearl quality, based on my years in pearl farming and the pearl industry. This article looks at how round and baroque pearls have been valued differently by producers and consumers, how the idea that “round is best” became established, and why I pay closer attention to nacre and luster than to shape alone.
