This is an Akoya pearl half-strand necklace.
This was a custom order, and the length was specified to be slightly shorter at 40 cm, allowing it to sit closely around the neckline.
The pearls are 9 mm Akoya natural blue pearls.
For this necklace, several pairs were first selected from a lot of 114 pearls. Then, from the remaining pearls, I selected those with a high level of quality and consistency in color and luster.
Even if a pearl has very strong luster, it cannot be used if its luster differs too much from the other pearls. The pearls are selected while keeping their size, luster, and color consistent at a high standard.
The findings are K18 gold, and stainless steel wire is used through the pearl section.
At Flower Jem, I always try to create pearl jewelry that is easy to wear in everyday life, but this particular necklace gives a slightly more formal impression.
Even so, I think it is a beautiful necklace that can still be worn comfortably as an everyday piece.
As with my other custom orders, this half-strand necklace is also something I would not have thought of on my own.
While making it, I also received advice from a familiar staff member at a nearby shop specializing in pearl findings.
She told me:
“There is also a method where a chain runs through the pearl section. In that case, the pearls will always remain centered.
However, using K18 gold throughout the entire 40 cm would make the necklace expensive.
This type of half-strand necklace was popular in the past, and there were also versions that used wire at that time.”
That was what she explained to me.
For this necklace, I used wire in order to keep the price within the customer’s budget.
Recently, I have been combining K18 yellow gold with natural blue pearls more often.
Little by little, I feel that this combination is becoming familiar to me as well.
Until now, I often paired natural blue pearls with white gold, but yellow gold gives them an even more luxurious appearance and looks beautiful too.
Now, here is a story about yesterday that is not particularly related to this necklace.
Today is July 27, 2026.
Yesterday evening, I went out for dinner with two classmates who attended the same nursery school as me from the age of three and then went to the same schools as me until we were eighteen.
There was a large class reunion in March this year, but it was difficult to have deeper conversations in such a large group, so this time the three of us decided to meet separately.
We talked a great deal about their children, our work, and our old school days.
During the conversation, I learned about one thing from our junior high school days that I had never known before.
Those two were the type of students who were elected as class representatives. In other words, they were the handsome boy and beautiful girl of our school days.
When preparing for the junior high school cultural festival, the class representatives from each class were appointed to the festival committee.
Around thirty committee members would gather at school during the summer vacation to prepare for the festival.
What surprised me was that, during the evening of those preparations, everyone gathered in the gymnasium to watch a horror movie. After that, they took part in a test of courage in pairs.
In other words, the committee members had their own special event.
They then all stayed overnight in the gymnasium.
I was very surprised to hear that junior high school boys and girls, even in a large gymnasium, had all slept in the same place.
Of course, it was officially approved by the teachers and the parents, and apparently it was a traditional event at the school.
I only learned about all of this for the first time last night.
I was surprised to discover that even among students attending the same school, there were things known only to the more popular students at the top of the social hierarchy.
Incidentally, he became so frightened during the test of courage that he left the girl who was paired with him behind and ran away.
He was also extremely popular with girls, but because several girls confessed their feelings to him, he apparently did not always give them a proper answer.
She was the best friend of one of the girls who never received a clear answer from him.
She became furious that her friend’s confession had been treated so carelessly and once slapped him.
He laughed and said,
“Come to think of it, you slapped me on the cheek in junior high school and told me, ‘Make up your mind!’”
We continued sharing all kinds of memories like this from 5:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m., but even six hours did not feel like enough. It was a truly wonderful evening.
Then, in a very typical mistake for me, I left the iPhone I use for Flower Jem photography in her car after she drove me to the station.
She called me shortly after I boarded the train, and that was when I realized what had happened.
It was already the last train, so I could not turn around and go back.
Today is the day I travel from Kobe to Osaka, but before that, I need to ride my motorcycle in the opposite direction from Osaka to retrieve the phone from her.
I will lose two valuable hours because of this, but riding my motorcycle is enjoyable, and I will also get to see my wonderful friend again, so I am trying to think of it positively.
So, this was a story that was sometimes related to the half-strand necklace and sometimes not related to it at all.
