Deep Sea Luster: The Enchanting Blue Akoya

Hello, this is Flower Jem.
The other day, I brought a necklace stand from Kobe so that I could work on pearls even in the house I rent for my weekday job. And tonight, for the second time, I was able to work on a necklace here in Osaka. These sessions were live streamed on YouTube. When I do live streams, my view counts drop dramatically, but I love that I don’t have to edit the videos. This time, I finished a 6mm Akoya natural blue pearl necklace with all-knotting. Well, it’s the same as always.

These pearls have significantly better luster than others. They are baroque pearls, but with strong luster, deep brilliance, and not just blue—there’s red and green too.

It seems that the indescribable luster and color—that “what on earth is going on” feeling—is what makes them so captivating. It’s a bit like when you fall for someone and want to know more and more. Is it because we don’t understand it that we want to know more, or simply because we love it? I’m not sure.

However, if a pearl is just plain blue with no depth, you can simply say, “It’s pretty.” But a pearl with depth, with colors you can’t sum up in one word, is a mystery. And maybe it’s that mystery that makes it so appealing.

Let’s say you go out to sea on a boat, far out. When you look down, you see a deep navy ocean. Of course, you can’t see the seabed. I find myself staring into that kind of sea for a long time. The feeling I get when looking into that deep ocean is similar to the feeling I get when I look at thick nacre.

By the way, I also get drawn in when I watch a washing machine spinning around. Some people are like that, right?

Though the washing machine and pearls both draw me in, I don’t think they have anything in common. The swirling water and laundry inside a washing machine draw me in, but it doesn’t feel captivating.

When you look at a beautiful pearl, what does it feel like to you? Is it like a washing machine? Or like a wonderful husband?

With that, from Japan where spring is just around the corner,

Pearl bless you.
