This is not a delicate or understated pearl ring.
It is a ring made to have a strong presence.

Large natural blue Akoya pearls circle the finger, and each pearl has a slightly different baroque shape and expression. Depending on the angle, you can see flashes of blue, green, pink, and silver interference colors.

 

 

The design originally began with a custom order from a senior from my school days.

She told me that large pearl rings like this were becoming popular in New York. At first, I was a little surprised and thought, “Are pearls this large really suitable for a ring?” But she simply told me, “This size is just right.”

Her words gave me the confidence to start developing the design.

 

 

The pearls are connected with wire and secured firmly at two points. If the ring is forced onto the finger too roughly, the wire may be placed under unnecessary stress, but under normal use, it is not designed to come apart easily.

It took me about a month of trial and error to arrive at this construction.

Between the pearls, I added small K18 white gold mirror balls. Compared with using only natural blue pearls, I feel that these small flashes of metal give the overall design more definition and balance.

 

 

The pearls used in this ring are natural blue Akoya pearls with thick nacre.

Their body color is a deep blue, while green and pink interference colors appear in different areas. Their luster is also strong, with a metallic quality on the surface.

Each pearl is slightly different in shape rather than perfectly round.

I think this individuality is one of the biggest attractions of the ring.

 

 

If every pearl were perfectly round, the overall look might feel more orderly. But in this ring, the slight differences between each pearl give the piece much more character.

When I look at them one by one, each pearl almost seems to have its own face and personality.

I named this ring Mederu — 愛でる.

In Japanese, mederu means to admire, appreciate, or lovingly gaze at something beautiful.

Because these pearls are always right there on your hand, this ring is almost made for simply looking at them and enjoying their individual colors, shapes, and luster throughout the day.

Rather than being a ring that disappears into an outfit, it is a ring that keeps giving you something to look at.

 

 

The current ring size is US 6.5.

When worn, this ring has a very strong presence. It is not a small or discreet ring, but rather a statement ring that allows the pearls themselves to be fully seen.

To be completely honest, this ring can be quite inconvenient in everyday life.

But personally, the beauty of these pearls wins over the inconvenience.

 

 

In particular, about five of the pearls that sit at the top of the ring have very smooth surfaces and strong luster. They show mysterious interference colors of pink, blue, and silver.

When I look at pearls like these, I honestly feel my heart rate rise a little because of how beautiful they are.

Some people may also worry about scratching the pearls.

However, I do not think you need to be overly concerned about ordinary contact with desks, tables, or the kinds of surfaces where you normally rest your hands.

For at least eight years, I regularly wore pearl cufflinks while doing desk work. The silver cufflink fittings became covered in scratches, but the pearls themselves remained completely undamaged.

Of course, rubbing pearls strongly against asphalt or a concrete wall would be another matter, but in normal daily life, we rarely place pearls in that kind of situation.

So I think this ring can be enjoyed in everyday use without becoming excessively worried about damaging the pearls.

 

 

This is a design I probably would never have created entirely on my own.

It only came into existence because of that unexpected custom order from my senior.

At the time, after hearing that this kind of ring was becoming popular in New York, I decided to make another one for sale as well.

And yet, nearly two years later, it still has not sold at all. Haha.

There is something amusing about making something because I was told it was becoming popular, only to discover that it did not become popular in my own shop at all.

 

 

Still, when I look at this ring again after some time, I am reminded that the pearls themselves are genuinely beautiful.

They are large, naturally blue, strongly lustrous, and full of individual character.

Whether or not this style is fashionable, I think there is a way of enjoying pearls that is only possible in a ring like this.

In the future, I would also like to create a similarly bold pearl ring using Flower Jem’s signature all-knot technique.

 

 

This ring is one of a kind.

I recommend it to someone who wants to enjoy large natural blue Akoya pearls in a bold and unconventional way.
